Fixed wing vs quadcopter
Planes fly further and longer, quads are easier to launch and hover. Here's how to choose, and the best first planes to buy.
The big difference
A quadcopter holds itself up with four spinning propellers, so it can hover, take off vertically and land on a small spot. A fixed-wing plane gets its lift from its wings, so it has to keep moving forward. That makes planes far more efficient: they fly for longer and cover more ground on the same battery.
Quadcopters are best for
- Photos and video from a fixed spot
- Small spaces and quick take-offs
- Learning to fly with GPS help and automatic landing
Fixed wing is best for
- Long, relaxing flights and covering big distances
- Learning real flying skills
- Long-range FPV
The catch is space. You need a large, open field to launch, turn and land. Joining a local model flying club is the easiest way to find a good site and get help from experienced pilots.
Best first planes

The rules still apply
Model aircraft follow the same CAA registration rules as drones, based on weight. Check our UK drone rules guide before your first flight.
